On Thursday, the Georgian government approved a new program on agricultural land. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has said that the right of redemption extends to grazing farms in addition to rented land.

Increasing access to agricultural resources in Georgia

He added: “If until now it was allowed to buy rented agricultural land up to 10 hectares, now this restriction will be lifted altogether. It is also important that the tenant be able to repurchase the arable land and pasture from the leased source from March 31, 2021. Until now, this right applied only to leased land before January 23, 2020. ”

Garibashvili believes this is a very important initiative because it puts all farmers on an equal footing.

“With this initiative, Georgian citizens can register about 11,000 hectares of arable land, which is worth 100 million GEL. The change, aimed at increasing the efficiency of the program and its interest in it, is an additional opportunity for people working in the agricultural sector to use more land as assets, for example, in government programs, to attract bank funding. “In general, both the entrepreneur and the government will benefit more from owning land and doing business.”

“Georgia has a lot to offer the tourism sector in general, especially in rural communities, and in agricultural tourism in particular,” said US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan.

Georgia is trying to introduce tourists to tourism opportunities, especially in rural communities. And with the arrival of tourists, this is an innovative digital platform that really paves the way for the revival of agricultural tourism and tourism in Georgia in general. ”

The US Government recognizes the tremendous potential of tourism to attract more international tourists to Georgia, and we are committed to helping farmers, small businesses and rural communities benefit from the tourism sector. Today in Odabno, Ambassador Degnan helped launch a new website that maps tourist sites across the South Caucasus, allowing tourists to experience the most unique experiences with local agriculture. A large American company also worked to help Georgian farmers and tour operators.
